Pittsburgh, PA, July 30, 2009 -The Pittsburgh Conference is pleased to announce that Pittcon's 2009 Marketing Chairman Adrian Michael will be one of two keynote speakers at Analitica Latin America, September 8 - 10, 2009, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the Transamerica Expo Center (TEC). Dr. Michael's topic will be "Electrochemical Analysis of Brain Neurotransmission Dynamics."
Abstract
Elucidating the details of the chemical events associated with neural processing in the brain presents a fascinating challenge for analytical chemistry. Neurochemical messages are spatially and temporally dynamic, may involve very low concentrations, and exist in a complex physicochemical background matrix. Implantable microsensors are making significant contributions to our understanding of these events. This presentation will describe recent progress in the in vivo monitoring of the neurotransmitter, dopamine, by fast-scan cyclic voltammetry in conjunction with carbon fiber microelectrodes, a paradigm for this area of research.
Adrian C. Michael was a graduate student at Emory University (Atlanta, Georgia) with Profesor Joseph B. Justice. He held postdoctoral appointments at Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana) with R. Mark Wightman and at The University of Texas at Austin with Adam Heller. He has been a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh since 1990.
Dr. Michael will be available for interviews and to answer questions at the Pittcon booth #850. If you are interested in pre-arranging a meeting, please contact publicity@pittcon.org.
About Pittcon 2010
This year, Pittcon, the premier annual conference and exposition on laboratory science, will be held in Orlando, Florida, at the Orange County Convention Center, West Building, from February 28 to March 5, 2010. Proceeds from Pittcon fund science education and outreach at all levels, kindergarten through adult. Pittcon 2010 will donate nearly a million dollars in the form of science equipment grants, research grants, scholarships, and internships for students, awards to teachers and professors, and grants to public science centers, libraries and museums.
